Ethical Issues in Human Services Organizations Nutritional well-being plays an essential role in the overall health, independence, and quality of life of older persons as well as disabled persons. This nation has a responsibility to at risk populations such as the elderly. Today, there are close to 6 million seniors in the United States facing the threat of hunger. Some of these citizens were raised during the Great Depression, they went on to protect our independence in the Second World War and won the cold war. Americas older citizens have been called the greatest generation by many. It is morally wrong that the citizens that built this country should suffer starvation in this land of plenty, which they helped to form. Workers should not seek private information from clients unless it is crucial to providing services or conducting work evaluation or research. Discrimination Workers should not practice, forgive, assist, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical disability. Dishonesty Social workers should not participate in, condone, or be associated with dishonesty or fraud. Any instances of misconduct should be reported to management immediately. Impairment Workers should not allow their own individual problems, social distress, legal problems, substance abuse, or mental health difficulties to obstruct their professional judgment and performance or to risk the best interests of people for whom they have a professional responsibility. If workers are having issues, immediately seek consultation and take appropriate corrective action by seeking professional help and taking any other steps necessary to care for clients and others. Integrity of the Profession Workers should work to maintain and promote high standards of practice and support and advance the values, ethics, knowledge, and mission of the company.
